ISO 14064-1:2018

ISO 14064-1 is the international standard that specifies requirements for designing, developing, managing, and reporting organisation-level greenhouse gas inventories. Issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and last updated in 2018, it is the most widely recognised audit-grade GHG inventory standard globally.

The relationship with the GHG Protocol

ISO 14064-1:2018 is closely aligned with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and largely compatible with it. The key difference is that ISO 14064-1 is designed to support third-party verification (ISO 14064-3), making it the preferred standard for regulatory submissions and assurance engagements. A GHGify report can satisfy both.

Seven greenhouse gases

ISO 14064-1 requires disclosure of all seven greenhouse gases recognised under the IPCC: CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, HFCs, PFCs, SF₆, and NF₃. GHGify tracks all seven, including per-gas breakdowns for Scope 1 sources where the data is available.

Quantification and documentation requirements

Who requires it

ISO 14064-1 conformance is increasingly required or recommended by governments, stock exchanges, banks providing green financing, and international supply chain partners. Singapore's SGX listing rules, the EU's CSRD, and many national carbon tax schemes explicitly reference or accept it.
